About the event

Kwanzaa is a 7-day festival held annually  Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 that celebrates African and African American culture and history. Created by Maulana Karenga in 1966 as a way to bring African Americans together to remember Black culture.  Karenga believed "you must have a cultural revolution before the violent revolution. The cultural revolution gives identity, purpose and direction."

The day will be magical, Spoken Word Legend from the Watts Prophets, Father Amde Hamilton will be honored as well as S. Pearl Sharp.  With performances by the Gil Scott-Heron Bluesology cast, Creative Love Network & more...

Kwanzaa celebrations include singing and dancing, storytelling, poetry reading, African drumming, and feasting. Even though the official celebration is seven days long, the guiding principles are meant to be incorporated into daily life. The weeklong period is meant to reinforce the seven guiding principles of Nguzo Saba.
